Nicholas Fairfax is a qualified barrister with an impressive background in the private sector, having held various leading positions in the shipping and marine insurance industries during his thirty-year career. He is currently a senior executive with Russia’s largest tanker shipping company, Sovcomflot, where he is Director of Sovcomflot UK Ltd. and Chairman of both Sovcomflot Overseas Holding Ltd. and Sovcomflot Management Services Ltd. His interest in the sea does not stop there; he is also a keen yachtsman and member of the Royal Yacht Squadron.
Lord Fairfax is an expert in Russia, including the Russian Arctic, and other countries of the Former Soviet Union, having been involved with the region for over thirty years. He has a strong record in not-for-profit activities and is patron of a number of Russian and other charities. In 2005, he organised and led the White Nights Ride charity motorcycle ride across Siberia, travelling 6,500 miles from Vladivostok to St. Petersburg. The ride raised $1 million for Charities Aid Foundation Russia and for the Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign in the UK.
A speaker of French, German, Italian and Russian, Lord Fairfax is also an active peer in the House of Lords, where he previously sat between 1977 and 1999, taking up his seat again in 2015. He was educated at Eton College and Cambridge University, where he studied International Law. With a strong interest in conservation and the environment, he was delighted to become a patron of Wildlife Vets International in 2015.
