Penny was so moved by the snow leopard’s fragile existence as depicted in a David Attenborough film of the snow leopard, that she painted a life-sized snow leopard that has a ghostly presence. He could be lost to the mountains and he could be lost to us forever. From habitat destruction, climate change and poaching to disease, sadly, all wild cats are under threat. The idea burst forth that Penny must find a way to paint to raise funds for these most endangered creatures, the very jewels in our planet’s crown.
Penny was an award-winning sculptor before an illness, diagnosed with ME (chronic fatigue syndrome), stopped her being able to work. As soon as she became well enough, Penny turned to paint and in particular produced a visual expression of the emotion aroused when we become excited by speed. Penny used magicians, dancers and horses as subjects, but it was the speed, combined with agility and grace, of big cats that she found particularly wondrous and captivating.
To ensure a future filled with wild cats Penny is thrilled to put on this solo show. Wildlife Vets International and the Big Cat Sanctuary will distribute funds to conservation activities focused around ensuring cats such as tigers, Asian leopards including Amur and snow leopards, cheetah and lions thrive in the wild.
