Buy a Raffle Ticket; save endangered birds

To safeguard their future, Gunner’s Quoin has been stripped of rats, cats, mice, hares, rabbits and goats – all taking a hand in decimating bird and reptile populations by eating eggs, predating on adults and destroying habitats.

It is a huge kite festival and there are competitions to have the last kite standing. The kite strings are coated in glass fibre to cut the other strings. Sadly these also have the effect of cutting anything they come into contact with. Stray strings end up tangled in trees and roosting birds are caught up, struggle and end up with horrific injuries, the most common of which is partially severed wings. The timing of the festival (January) is at its worst because it is during the migration season. Several very endangered species are caught up including a number of vultures, whose numbers have plummeted by 90% in the last 10-15 years. By increasing the survival rate, these birds can either be released or be put into the captive breeding programme, which for the white backed vulture, is crucial to their long term survival.
