This is an initiative set up by officials from Kerinci National Park, Sumatra, village volunteers and conservation organisations to combat the poachers who thought to take advantage of the fact that officials wont be working over the holiday period. Volunteers scan their bit of the Kerinci NP for tiger, deer and bird snares. The winners, TPCU III Jambi team, destroyed a total of 16 active tiger snares (in two different districts of the park) 290 active deer snares (poachers arrested and passed into custody of the national park) and 30 ground bird snares. Score total 23,100. Brilliant work. In total, 40 active tiger snares, 564 deer snares and 79 bird snares were collected by the 6 teams taking part and two poachers were arrested. Now all they need is a snare art programme like that in Zimbabwe set up by Painted Dog Conservation. Indonesian vets who deal with tigers in snares are sure they behaving strangely. The Indonesian Veterinary Medical Association Wildlife and Conservation Office (BKSDA) have organised a workshop to agree a framework within which to collect data to determine the disease status of these tigers and implement any safeguarding measures.

FUNDS ARE URGENTLY needed to get the Indonesian vets to the workshop. TEXT WILD05 £5 (or £3 or £10) to 70070 to donate now.
