"This month we are inspired by WVI’s commitment to restoring the UK’s native wildlife" says WVI's Trustee Louise Heathcote; WVI is providing the essential veterinary support for the Pine Marten Recovery Project.
"In 2015 we helped Vincent Wildlife Trust and partners move 20 pine martens from Scotland to Wales. In early 2016 we had proof of successful breeding. These charismatic creatures were once the second most common carnivore in the British Isles, yet 100 years ago their numbers dropped dramatically to dangerously low levels, due to deforestation, activities of gamekeepers and hunting for fur." "Although generally carnivorous, the pine marten makes the most of the fruit and berries around in the autumn to build up reserves for winter. This inspired me to make a super easy & very tasty trail biscuit, good for lunch boxes and as a booster on a long hike" continues Louise. Ingredients (Makes 12-16)
- 2 very ripe bananas, mashed
- 1 cup oats, rolled or quick
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- small handful semi-sweet chocolate chips
Mash the bananas and add the other ingredients. There are plenty of other ingredients that could be added in such as a dash of vanilla extract, shredded coconut, chopped nuts, dried fruit or nuts. Place spoonfuls on a baking tray and bake at 180C for 15-20mins Please download the full recipe here.
