The Christmas Challenge 2015
30/11/2015
The Big Give Christmas Challenge (#TGBChallenge) gives is an opportunity to have your donations doubled. The money will help us to to provide health screening to the pine marten recovery project.
#doubleyourdonation #TBGChallenge Fund-raising this Friday and Saturday through The Big Give Christmas Challenge will help to fund the veterinary input that is essential to ensure the health and welfare of translocated pine martens, as well as monitoring health of other species in the release ecosystem. This autumn, 20 pine martens were successfully translocated from a thriving population in Scotland to a struggling population in Wales. WVI, Vincent Wildlife Trust and partners aim to repeat the success in 2016; giving the population the best chance possible to become sustainable. WVI vet Alex checks all the pine martens caught and those that are adult and in good health were then taken to Wales. Here they were released into pens to acclimatise and ensure there were no ill effects from the translocation process. Ensuring their radio trackers were working, the pine martens were released into Wales. A team from Vincent Wildlife Trust radio tracked the pine martens regularly to find out where they went. Samples taken from the pine martens will contribute further to ongoing genetic and health studies. Answering, for example, how related the pine martins in the programme are to each other and what diseases the different populations are exposed to. None of the pine martens caught were anything other than fit and healthy and a range of ages, confirming that the Scottish population is thriving. Please support the second phase of this project. You can take part in the #TBGChallenge with your donation here.
